Philly Cheesesteak Fries
Ingredients (serves 3-4)
450g steak, thinly sliced (flank, rump, or sirloin)
1 teaspoon garlic salt
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 green bell pepper, seeded and thinly sliced
1 onion, thinly sliced
8-10 slices white American cheese (or melting white cheddar, mozzarella, or provolone)
590g frozen waffle fries (such as McCain Quick Cook)
1 tablespoon olive oil
Instructions
1. Cook the fries
Preheat oven to 220°C (fan assisted).
Spread the waffle fries on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Bake for 15-20 minutes (or according to package instructions), until crispy and golden brown.
2. Prepare the steak
Meanwhile, heat a large ovenproof skillet over medium-high heat with 1 tablespoon of olive oil.
Add the thinly sliced steak, sprinkle with garlic salt and pepper.
Sauté quickly until browned, about 3-4 minutes.
Remove the steak from the pan and set aside.
Reserve 1 tablespoon of the cooking juices, discard the rest.
3. Cook the vegetables
Return the pan to medium heat, add the reserved liquid.
Add the sliced onion and green bell pepper.
Sauté for 5-7 minutes, until the onions are tender and the peppers are still slightly crisp.
Remove the vegetables and set aside with the steak.
4. Assemble
In the same pan (or a gratin dish if the pan is not ovenproof), arrange a layer of hot fries. Cover with 4 slices of cheese.
Add half of the steak and vegetables.
Repeat the process: remaining fries + remaining steak/vegetables + remaining cheese on top.
5. Melt the cheese
Bake for 5 to 8 minutes, just until the cheese is melted and coats everything nicely.
For an even gooier finish, broil for 1 to 2 minutes at the end.
Tips and Variations
Add jalapeños for a spicy version.
Replace the waffle fries with home fries, or even nachos for a Tex-Mex Philly cheesesteak.
You can also use a mix of cheeses: cheddar + mozzarella + raclette cheese.
