Rice Gratin with Ham and Cheese
Ingredients:
200 g rice (long grain or basmati)
200 g cooked ham (diced or sliced)
100 g grated Gruyère or Emmental cheese
2 eggs
20 cl heavy cream
10 cl milk
1 knob of butter (for the dish)
Salt, pepper, nutmeg (optional)
Instructions:
Cook the rice:
Cook the rice in a saucepan of boiling salted water according to package directions. Drain and let cool slightly.
Prepare the custard mixture:
In a bowl, beat the eggs with the heavy cream and milk.
Season with salt, pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg if desired.
Assemble:
Add the cooked rice, diced ham, and half of the grated cheese to the mixture. Mix well.
Pour into the dish:
Butter a gratin dish.
Pour the mixture into the dish and smooth the surface. Sprinkle with the remaining grated cheese.
Baking:
Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) for 20 to 25 minutes, until the top is golden brown.
Suggestions:
Serve with a green salad to balance the dish.
You can add peas, corn, or herbs (parsley, chives) for variety.
